Dear Members:
I am pleased to inform you that at a meeting of the Board of Directors
and Board of Trustees, a resolution was passed recommending that the
Membership vote to retain Rabbi Yehoshua Kohl as Rabbi of Kehillat New
Hempstead. As you know, for the past several months, Rabbi Kohl has
served as "Interim" Rabbi and we are pleased that he has decided to
continue in a more formal manner.
Since we have already scheduled the Annual Membership Meeting of
Kehillat New Hempstead for Sunday, May 20, 2007, the Board decided
that the most sensible and practical way to hold the vote would be by
doing it directly before the Annual Meeting.
Therefore, in accordance with the By-Laws of KNH we will be holding a
Special Meeting of the Membership on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 9:30 am
in the Shul. (which will be followed by the Annual Meeting of the
Membership at 9:45am).
I would like to reiterate to everyone the importance of attending
these meetings and casting your vote. It is very important that both
spouses make every attempt to attend the meeting to ensure a quorum to
enable us to conduct the meeting and allow us to vote.
With regard to the Special Meeting, enclosed please find the following:
1. Notice of Special Meeting
2. Proxy (PLEASE NOTE THAT PROXIES WILL BE ALLOWED FOR VOTING
PURPOSES, BUT NOT FOR PURPOSES OF COUNTING TOWARDS A QUORUM)
To alleviate the problem of finding babysitters for your children, the
Board will be providing babysitting services during the meeting.
Again, it is very important that both spouses attending the meeting
(notwithstanding being allowed to submit proxies), so please make
every attempt to attend the meeting. Please note that per the terms of
the By Laws of KNH, only Full Members in good standing are entitled to
vote. If you have any questions regarding the above please feel free
to contact me at 845-354-0911 or at
fred.brinn@gmail.com
Very truly yours,

This past week, we began our remodeling and redecorating project for
the Shul, which began with the complete painting of the Main
Sanctuary
and Bais Medrash areas. We also re-painted the Shul office and both
the men's and women's bathrooms. In addition to this, we installed
new
sconces on the side wall, new emergency light fixtures and exit
signs,
and all light bulbs were replaced in the Shul.
I'm sure we will all agree that this work was long overdue, and we
are
confident that you will truly see a major difference. While the
painting was completed today, we will try to get things back in
proper
order before Shabbos, and depending on the level of paint smell in
the
shul, we might be davening in the downstairs Simcha Hall over
Shabbos.
Please excuse this inconvenience.
The next phase of the project will be the re-carpeting of the Main
Sanctuary and Bais Medresh and we have already begun to prep for
this
work. We hope, IY"H, to have the carpeting done before Shavous, as
there is typically a 4 -6 week lead time for ordering and
installation.
Again, I would like to thank Sarit Kaplan and the decorating
committee
members, Shiela Wolfset, Jill Minsky, and Lynda Lafazan, for all of
their continuing efforts on this project.
On a side note, the Board, in anticipation of the warmer weather, is
looking in to either fencing off the front area (corner of Brick
Church and Union Rd.) with a split rail fence (similar to the house
across the street) or berming up the area and landscaping it. We
will
let you know our decision once the cost estimates have been
reviewed.
Have A Good Shabbos

Dear Members &
Friends:
On behalf of the
Board of Directors and Trustees, I am pleased to announce the
recipients of Honors at this year’s 20th Annual Dinner
!!
Stacey and
Nathan Losman will
be our “Guests of Honor”.
Both Stacey and
Nathan have been integral parts of the Shul over the years.
Nathan served on the Board of Directors last year, and he
currently is Chairman of our Legal Committee, advising and
coordinating different legal issues that have come up. He has
been a major asset in the Shul’s growth and you can always count
on Nathan for a straight forward and level-headed solution to
any issue. He has truly been our “voice of reason”. Stacey as
well is currently on the Board of the Sisterhood, and she has
chaired numerous events at her home. Stacey never says no when
asked to participate or help out with events, and we always look
forward to Shul gatherings around the Losman pool.
Sarit Kaplan
will be the recipient of the “Aishes Chayil Award”.
Sarit has become
famous for her amazing and incredible graphics that make up the
Shul’s flyers for events as well as the weekly Kehilla News.
This past year, Sarit became Vice President of the Sisterhood,
as well as being an important member of the Rabbinic Search
Committee. In addition, Sarit headed the Decorating Committee
and was the force behind the very successful Yom Hatzmaaut
program last year.
Joe Hoch
will be honored with the “Community Service Award”.
As a career New
York City Police Officer, Joe is currently a Deputy Inspector,
serving as the Commanding Officer of the 52nd Precinct in the
Bronx. The Hoch’s have also been staunch supporters of the
Shul over the years and we are privileged to have them in our
Community. It is an honor for us to recognize Joe’s dedication
in protecting the lives and property of citizens, and his
concern and respect for human life and the dignity of each
individual.
The 20th
Annual Dinner will, IY”H, be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007.
We hope to finalize the location and other details shortly, and
will be sending out invitations to all for you.
Mazel Tov to all
of the honorees, you are all well deserving of this Honor.
It is our hope
that we will have 100% participation at this year’s dinner so
that we may show proper respect and honors to those who
selflessly dedicate their time and energies to the Community. It
will also afford us the opportunity to celebrate together the
successes of our Shul and Community.
Thank you

Dear Members-
As we proceed this Shabbos with the first of our two Rabbinic
Interviews, I wanted to once again stress to all of you the
importance
of this process, and the need for your participation in the program.
The candidate will be in Shul over Shabbos for a series of droshas /
lectures on a wide variety of topics. Therefore, it is important
that
both you and your spouse make every attempt to attend each part of
the
program, as this will be the primary means for us to evaluate his
capabilities for the position as Rabbi of Kehilat New Hempstead.
On Motzei Shabbos, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Shul, which is the
last
part of the program, the candidate will present to us an overview of
his education and rabbinic experience and how he envisions his role
in
the Shul. A question and answer session will then be held, beginning
with a prepared list of several questions formulated by the Rabbinic
Search Committee on a well rounded scope of issues relevant to his
qualifications for the position. Members will then have the
opportunity to pose questions directly to the candidate. At the end
of
the meeting members may stay to talk further with the candidate.
On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to thank all our members
for your steadfast commitment and dedication to the Shul. The
Rabbinic
Search process is one further step in our growth and rebuilding and
we
hope that you will be an integral part of the process.
Thank you

SHABBOS "PROBA" -
RABBINIC INTERVIEW
Dear Members-
This coming Shabbos,
Parshas Vayechi, January 6-7, Rabbi Gidon Leib Lane will be
spending Shabbos with us as for the first of two scheduled "Probas"
(Rabbinic interviews) for the position of Rabbi of the Shul.
In conjunction with the
program we felt that it would be a good opportunity to have a
Friday night family dinner in the Shul, as was done with the
scholar in residence program held two months ago. Since
Rabbi Lane will be speaking in the Shul Friday night as
part of an Oneg Shabbos, this will also serve to allow both
spouses to attend the lecture and Oneg, without worrying about
babysitting, as babysitting services will be provided
during the lecture.
The cost for the dinner
will be $12.00 per adult and $8.00 per child; with a family cap
of $50.00 (vegetarian meals will be available). We will also
have a similar Friday night dinner for the next candidate's
Shabbos Probas, which will be held on January 26-27.
If you will be
attending the dinner on Friday night please call Shelley Karben
a.s.a.p. at 845-304-9433 or via email at skarben@yahoo.com
by no later than Thursday morning.
Please see the attached
schedule and program for next Shabbos.
It is very important that
all members make every effort to be in Shul for the entire
Shabbos program, as this will give everyone a chance to meet and
hear Rabbi Lane speak and present his ideas and
vision for the Shul.
This is a major
decision for us as a Shul and Community and it is important that
each member participate and voice their opinion in the selection
process.
Thank you

Dear
Members-
This
coming Shabbos, Parshas Vayechi, January 6-7, is the first of two
scheduled "Probas" (Rabbinic interviews) with the two candidates that
were recommended by the Rabbinic Search Committee to the Board, for the
position of Rabbi of the Shul, and which is now being presented to the
membership.
I
would like to personally thank the Rabbinic Committee, headed by its
Chairman, Trevor Resnick, for all of their hard work and dedication to
this process these past few months.
Rabbi Gidon Leib Lane will be the first candidate
presented to the membership in a program to be held on both Friday
night, Shabbos day, and culminating with a members question and answer
session on Motzei Shabbos.
In conjunction with the program we felt that it would be a good
opportunity to have a Friday night family dinner in the Shul, as was
done with the scholar in residence program held two months ago. Since
Rabbi Lane will be speaking in the Shul Friday night as part of an Oneg
Shabbos, this will also serve to allow both spouses to attend the
lecture and Oneg, without worrying about babysitting, as babysitting
services will be provided during the lecture.
The
cost for the dinner will be $12.00 per adult and $8.00 per child, with a
family cap of $50.00 (vegetarian meals will be available). We will also
have a similar Friday night dinner for the next candidate's Shabbos
Probas, which will be held on January 26-27. If you will be attending
the dinner on Friday night please call Shelley Karben at 845-304-9433 or
via email at
skarben@yahoo.com by no later than Thursday morning.
Please see the attached schedule and program for next Shabbos.
I am confident that everyone is aware of
the importance of participating in this process. It is crucial that all
members be in Shul for the entire Shabbos program. This will be a major
decision for us as a Shul and Community and it is important that each
member participate in the selection process.

November 29, 2006
Kislev 8, 5767
Dear Members and Friends:
As many of you know,
this past July 2006, a lawsuit was commenced by several people against certain
Board members individually, as well as against the Board of Director, Board of
Trustees, and Kehillat New Hempstead. The lawsuit, an alleged derivative
action, filed during the Three Weeks and with an initial hearing date on Tisha
B’Av, initially sought a preliminary injunction prohibiting Kehillat New
Hempstead from, among other things, identifying and hiring a new Rabbi.
Overall, the plaintiffs sought not only to force Kehillat New Hempstead to
rehire R. Tendler, but they also claimed monetary damages to them personally in
an amount in excess of $1,000,000. These monetary damages were being sought
both from Kehillat New Hempstead, and the individual Board members. As part of
the initial phase of this lawsuit, the Court decided to temporarily prohibit
certain KNH activities pending the determination of the request for a
preliminary injunction.
I am pleased to
inform you that the Court this past week issued a decision denying the
plaintiffs’ application for a preliminary injunction in all respects. As
such, KNH is now free to operate without any Court imposed restriction or
prohibition. The only matter now remaining in this lawsuit is KNH’s motion to
dismiss the entire action. After numerous requests for an adjournment by
plaintiffs, that motion is now returnable in Court on December 22, 2006.
In conjunction with
the Court’s decision, and our firm convictions that all actions taken by KNH and
its Board members were appropriate in all regards, we remain confident that the
entire lawsuit will be dismissed.
In light of the above, a Special Membership Meeting
will be scheduled in the next few weeks to discuss the future plans of the Shul.
All members will be sent a notice of the meeting shortly, indicating all the
details of the meeting and the agenda.
Fortunately for all of us, both as individuals and as
a Community, Kehillat New Hempstead continues to successfully operate and grow
with renewed viability, and we look forward B”H, to even more unimpeded
successes and achievements in the future.

Dear Members & Friends:
I believe it very worthwhile to convey to
you the overwhelmingly positive comments I received about how beautiful
Simchas Torah was, and what a truly special day it turned out to be.
Besides the weather being one of the
nicest we had all of Succos, it was also a very emotionally uplifting
day and one filled with sincere Simcha and joy. The Shul was filled with
ruach and it was lively and very leibidik.
Yasher Koach to the Sisterhood for making
and providing the peckalach and flags to all the children, and to
Shelley Karben and Co. with the preparation of all of the Kiddushim and
food and drinks that were put out all of Yom Tov.
One of the biggest highlights of the day
came when the entire Shul walked down Union Road, with the Sifre Torahs
in hand, to join with Knesses Israel for a Hakafa in front of their Shul.
The deep sense of Achdus that we all felt and the heartfelt Simcha of
joining with our friends in New Hempstead was something that will long
be remembered.
This Hakafa was a long time in coming, and
especially meaningful to those that have been in the community the
longest, and it was a clear display of the friendship and unity that we
share with Knesses Israel.
Mazel Tov to Rabbi Kerner for his being
honored as Chassan Torah and to Shlomo Pomeranz for his being chosen as
Chassan Breshis. Both Rabbi Kerner and Shlomo have gone far beyond the
call in their hard work, dedication and commitment to the Shul. It was
an honor for the Shul to have chosen them for these great honors.
We also would like to thank Rabbi Glazer
for all of his efforts on behalf of the Shul, and as a token of our
appreciation, the Shul will be making a Kiddush in his Honor on the
Shabbos of the Shulʼs anniversary, Parshas Lech Lecha.
May we all be Zoche to share many more
Simchas together as a united Community in the service of Hashem
Yisborach.

Dear Members & Friends:
Over the past few weeks I have thanked various people for all their
efforts on behalf of the Shul, especially during these past Yom
Tovim.
One individual, whom I overlooked in mentioning and who, day after
day, week after week, is continuously available and present in the
Shul to advise and help in all ways possible, is Rabbi Shimon Kerner.
The Kehilla owes a tremendous Hakaros HaTov to him for all that he
has done and continues to do.
May we merit
this Simchas Torah to truly rejoice over the Torah and grow in our
appreciation of Torah.

Dear Members & Friends:
Over the past few weeks, the Board has
been discussing appropriate ways to show our support for our brethren in
Eretz Yisroel who are suffering daily through this time of crisis. One such
way has been the Tehillim and learning programs that we had these past two
weeks. We have also discussed various Chesed and Tzedukah organizations in
Israel as well.
One such program called
Beit Tamchui Hoshaya is a “soup
kitchen” type of organization located in Nahariya, and is similar to a
“Tomche Shabbos”. This organization, before the conflict began, cooked and
prepared meals for hundreds of poor and elderly people on a weekly basis.
Since the start of the war, this number has now exceeded 1000 meals per
week.
As more and more families have needed
to seek shelter in bomb shelters their needs have grown tremendously. Food,
toiletries, games for children are in dire need as these families cannot
venture outside for any long period of time and this has made it very hard
to obtain basis everyday needs.
The volunteers of this
organization have continued to deliver meals, diapers, toys, and other items
through blaring air raid sirens and as rockets continue to fall around them.
They have risked their lives to
help others, and that is specifically why we need to help them at this time.
There are also many other
organizations that are also in dire need of our assistance, such as, Magan
David Adom, Meir Panim, Hatzalah of Yehuda and Shomrom, Yad Sarah, etc., and
we hope that everyone would find someway to do what they feel is right.
May the Z’cus of our giving tzedukah,
especially during these troubled times, may Hashem Yisborah grant all of us
and Klal Yisroel Refuahs, Shalom, and only Simchot to celebrate, and may we
be Zoche to see the Bais HaMikdash rebuilt speedily in our times.
Good Shabbos

Dear Members & Friends:
We are all aware of the tragic events and state of affairs in Eretz Yisroel
and we pray that Hashem Yisborach will bring a speedy end to the violence,
that all of the soldiers and people of Israel will remain safe, and that the
captured soldiers be released immediately.
This past week, the Shul participated in a program coordinated by the OU and
the RCA called a "Night of Prayer and Torah Study". The program was well
attended and the feedback we received was encouraging and overwhelmingly
positive. Thank you again to Rabbi Kerner for his insightful Shiur on the
topic of "Pidyon Shevuim".
As a result, the Board decided that it would be appropriate to continue this
program on a weekly basis. The program will be held on Thursday evenings,
following Maariv. The program and time will be announced each week. The
program will consist of the recital of several perakim of Tehillim, followed
by a brief Shiur relating to the situation Israel.
The entire program will last approximately 1/2 hour, and men and women are
invited.
We hope you will join us.
Please see the below attachment for this week's announcements.
Have a Great Shabbos

Erev Shabbos Parshas Naso
Dear Friends:
As mentioned to you in my message
dated May 31, 2006, several committees were
going to be formed in the hope of obtaining greater participation from the
membership in the functioning of the Shul, as well as a means of fostering
the future growth of the Shul.
One of the most important
committees that the Board felt was critical to
such growth was a Rabbinic Search Committee, and as a result, I am pleased
to inform you that such a committee has been
established. The purpose of this committee will
be to solicit names, obtain resumes’, interview candidates, and recommend
names to the membership for final approval.
In addition this
committee, several others were formed as well,
and the attached letter outlines the various components of the Shul that
will be covered by these committees.
One specific committee is still in
need of volunteers. The “Youth Programs & Groups” is in need of someone to
organize the Shabbos morning youth groups and to plan events, trips and
other programs for teens as well. Some of the older children that were
previously running the Shabbos morning program will be asked to participate
once again, but the need for an adult coordinator is critical to the proper
functioning of such a program. The Board will also be actively seeking a
“Youth Director” and your suggestions and recommendations for interested
parties would be appreciated. The Board feels that a well organized Youth
Program is vital for our current members and to enable us to attract new
members to the community.
In addition to the above, the Board of
Directors and Trustees has unanimously decided that it would be in the best
interests of the Shul to have the name of the Shul, “Kehillat New
Hempstead”, changed. Furthermore, the additional name that as been part of
the “KNH” name, “The Rav Aaron Jofen zt’l Community Synagogue” will continue
to be recognized and used.
The Board feels that the best and
proper way to choose a new name for the Shul would be through requesting
names from the membership. Therefore, all members are requested to submit
their choice, along with a brief description of why you feel your name is
appropriate for the Shul. You may also indicate that no change is necessary.
The names will be reviewed by the Board and in the event that there is a
common “theme” or name that was continuously submitted, the Board of
Directors will narrow those names to 2 or 3 for final membership approval.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR CHOICES BY JUNE 25,
2006 via e-mail to me at
dadsy5@yahoo.com. Or by
simply replying to this email.
As always if you have any comments or
suggestions please feel free to contact me at 845-354-0911 or at
dadsy5@yahoo.com.
Good Shabbos

On behalf of the Board, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the
membership for the strong turnout at the recent Annual Membership meeting. Your
support and dedication for the future of the Shul was evident by the number of
families that participated in the meeting and voiced ideas and opinions on
different issues.
Since that meeting, which seems like months ago, the Board has been busy with a
variety of issues, some of which I will elaborate on below.
We are thankful to David Klarberg of DMK Landscape for his generous offer of
maintaining the lawns this season, free of charge. As some of you may know,
David grew up in New Hempstead and his parents still live in the neighborhood.
In the next several weeks various Committees will be formed to handle different
aspects of the Shul. Some committees such as the Ritual Committee and Legal
Affairs Committee have already been busy at work, and we anticipate forming
others as well in the very near future. Others will include, “House/Property”,
“Membership/Fundraising”, “Building/Decorating”, “Catering/Kitchen”, and
“Communications” . As we continue to move forward towards rebuilding our Kehilla,
we will be implementing a “Rabbinic Search Committee”.
It is our hope that our members will be eager to participate in some of these
committees and we will be following up with you shortly.
One of the biggest concerns of the Board is the youth and teens of the community
and we will also be looking into programs and events to promote their
participation, and for the growth of the community by attracting young families
to the Shul.
The Board is also currently looking into a new lease with the Yeshiva and is
reviewing a proposal from a day camp that wishes to use the Shul over the
summer.
Our new website is slowly being formed and while it is still “under
construction”, some information is already on the site. Please check it out at
www.knh.org. Thank you to Hanan Waizman for all
of his efforts in spearheading this project.
With several pending legal issues initiated against the Shul by Rabbi Tendler,
the Legal Affairs Committee (Nathan Losman, Chairman, Jeff Cohen, Bruce Minsky,
and Daniel Schwartz) has been meeting regularly in an effort to protect the
Shul’s interests as best as possible. We will continue to keep you updated on
these matters.
Since Shavuos is the time when we are given the opportunity to reaccept the
Torah with the same zeal and vigor as originally, all of us, in our personal
acceptance of the Torah, should strive to emulate the nation of Israel when
encamped at Mt. Sinai. This is especially true in these precarious times,
whereby our unity as a nation, united in the service of G-d with unwavering
devotion to Him and His Torah, is crucial to our survival.
May we all merit to celebrate the receipt of the Torah as a united community and
nation that knows only peace.
Good Yom Tov & Chag Samayach
